• Borden Building – 820 Clay Street, Raleigh, NC 27605
  The Borden Building is among the only surviving remnants of what was once the Methodist Home for Children. Erected in 1900, the Borden Building itself acted as home to the superintendent. Later, it was converted to serve hundreds of children over the years. Since its purchase by the City of Raleigh in 1982, it and adjoining Fred Fletcher Park have been an oasis of tranquility in the midst of an urban setting.
  
  
• Heck-Andrews House – 309 North Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27601
  The Heck-Andrews House has been praised by historians as one of the finest surviving examples of Second Empire architecture. At the crossroads of many other key sites, including the lieutenant governor's office, it was completed in 1872 and occupied for more than a century as a private residence. It was vacant until 2014, the year of a major renovation, and is now open to public visitors.
  
  
• Haywood Hall House and Gardens – 211 N. Bern Place, Raleigh, NC 27601
  Haywood Hall House and Gardens is a testament to the life of John Haywood, the first elected treasurer of North Carolina. A frame house in the prominent Federal style, it is now the oldest house on an original site anywhere within Raleigh's city limits. It has a unique collection of family portraits, a variety of original furniture, and a permanent collection of antique dolls. Admission is always free.
  
  
• Joel Lane Museum House – 160 South Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27603
  The Joel Lane Museum House is noteworthy as the oldest home within Wake County: It dates back to 1769. The spot is heralded as the "Birthplace of North Carolina's Capital" thanks to a fateful agreement by Joel Lane to sell 1,000 acres to the state for the construction of official buildings and infrastructure. Today, the site offers two other historic buildings and a gift shop.
  
  
• L.L. Polk House – 537 North Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27604-1119
  L.L. Polk House features a style that has been called "gingerbread Gothic." Dating to 1890, it was built by one of the most prominent men in the state, a former part-owner of the Raleigh News and Observer. Tours are available by appointment only and will shed light on the life of Col. L.L. Polk as well as the storied history of the property itself.
  
  
• North Carolina Executive Mansion – 200 North Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27601
  North Carolina Executive Mansion sits just steps from the Heck-Andrews house listed above. Built from local materials, it has been the official home of North Carolina's governors since 1891. It was once lauded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as "the most beautiful governor's residence interior" in the nation. Tour reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.

Located less than 30 minutes from downtown Raleigh, the Zebulon Historic District is one of the largest in Wake County. In February, the NC National Register Advisory Committee nominated the district for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, making this a great time for our real estate agents to take a look at this fascinating area.

• Carolina Mudcats - Five County Stadium, 1501 NC 39 Hwy., Zebulon, NC 27597
  What's summer without the sights and sounds of baseball? Enjoy a hot dog and beer as you watch the Carolina Mudcats take the field at Five County Stadium, right down the street from Zebulon homes for sale. This Low-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers has featured players such as reigning Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes on its roster. • Zebulon Artisan Market - Zebulon Municipal Complex, 1003 N. Arendell Ave., Zebulon, NC 27597
  Zebulon is a fertile community of artists and small business owners, producing goods from fresh produce to handmade jewelry. Support these industrious entrepreneurs by purchasing directly from the source at the Zebulon Artisan Market. This year's vendor lineup includes My Zen Acres, featuring bath and body care products, and Batten Acres, selling specialty poultry and pork. The market is held each Saturday from April 23 through June 5. Hours are 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  
  
• Zebulon Town Hall - 1003 N. Arendell Ave., Zebulon, NC 27597
  As Zebulon Town Hall majestically presides over the Municipal Complex, it serves as a microcosm of the district's storied past. The building opened in 1909 as Wakelon School, one of four high schools in the county. In later years, the school was converted to a training facility for GlaxoSmithKline before its current incarnation as the seat of local government. As a bonus, the halls are filled with the works of community artists. Zebulon Town Hall is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. - to 5 p.m.
  
  
• Zebulon Community Park - 401 S. Arendell Ave., Zebulon, NC 27597
  Zebulon's history encompasses more than buildings and events. Mother Nature makes her presence known at Zebulon Community Park, 47 acres of fun for the whole family. Test your skills on the park's 18-hole disc golf course, considered one of the best in the state. Other features include two multi-use athletic fields, a toddler playground, two basketball courts, and walking trails. Leashed dogs are welcome, so bring Fido along, as well as a picnic lunch. The park is open seven days a week from dawn until dusk.
  
  
• McLean's Ole Time Cafe - 418 W. Gannon Ave., Zebulon, NC 27597
  Family dinner is even better when another family does the cooking and cleaning. Since 1956, McLean's Ole Time Cafe has been serving comfort food favorites such as chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and fried chicken with sawmill gravy. Want to eat around your own dining table? Call ahead for a carryout order. Breakfast and lunch specials are offered on weekdays. Hours are 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily.

There are so many things to love about living in the Raleigh area! Not only are there many beautiful Raleigh homes for sale right now, but there are also excellent dining and entertainment options, great schools, and a rich culture and history. 

If you love older homes, you'll definitely want to explore some of the designated historic districts in and around Raleigh's downtown area. Some of the historic houses here are open to the public, while others remain private homes. Either way, the area offers excellent opportunities for an afternoon sightseeing tour. Here are a few you'll want to check out. 

Capitol Area Historic District

Located right in the center of Raleigh, the Capitol Area Historic District is home to the Capitol building, the State Supreme Court, and two churches that date back to the mid-19th century. 

You'll also find numerous historic monuments and Haywood Hall, the oldest house in Raleigh. It was built in 1799 and features stunning gardens that make it a popular spot for weddings and events. 

Boylan Heights

One of Raleigh's oldest suburban areas, today, it's just at the edge of Raleigh's downtown. This hilly, wooded area features a variety of lovely old homes, many of which have been revitalized and are now single-family residences. 

Moore Square Historic District

While you won't find any houses in the Moore Square Historic District, but it is home to two beautiful parks that have been a part of the city since 1792. It's also the location of the city's giant copper acorn, a half-ton sculpture in the park that makes for a great photo-opp. While you're there, make sure you rub it for good luck!

The area is also home to City Market, which was originally established in 1914. In the 1920s, it was knowns as "Black Main Street." Today, revitalization efforts have resulted in a redevelopment of City Market and a return to activity in the district. 

Oakwood Historic District

In the post-Civil War era, Oakwood was created as a rural neighborhood that was quite a hike into town. Today, it's essentially in Raleigh's downtown. However, many of the area's Victorian-style homes still look how they did back then. 

Although the homes were neglected for some time, the area underwent a restoration in the 1970s. It became Raleigh's first designated historic district in 1947. Today it's one of the area's loveliest neighborhoods. 

Five Points Neighborhoods 

Another interesting and eclectic area, the Five Points Neighborhoods, is a short drive from downtown, conveniently located near the interstate, and is well-known for its block of great restaurants and bars. 

It was developed in the 1920s as a series of planned communities designed to give residents a break from the hectic urban life. The Five Points area comprises several neighborhoods, including Vanguard Park, Bloomsbury, Roanoke Park, and Hayes Barton, which was once considered one of the area's most desirable neighborhoods. 

Today, Five Points is very popular among young, first-time homebuyers. The housing styles here vary greatly, from 1920s bungalow-style houses to larger, more ornate homes. This hodge-podge of home sizes and styles only serves to make the area even more unique.
